Inspector General of Police (IGP) and Attorney-at-Law Priyantha Weerasuriya has asserted that he has been granted full powers under the Constitution to safeguard law and order in the country. “My hands are not tied.

There is no political interference. I will duly fulfil the responsibilities entrusted to me,” he said, urging the public to fully cooperate with the police.

He made these remarks during a discussion with a private television channel on issues of law and order and the fight against underworld gangs.

The IGP emphasised that maintaining law and order is primarily the responsibility of the police, who, unlike other security forces, work in direct collaboration with the public. Therefore, it is essential to preserve public trust in the police.

He added that Sri Lanka must introduce modern facilities into its police service, similar to international standards. Recruitment processes, which have remained unchanged for decades, will be reformed, and legal professionals will be incorporated into the police service.

From next year, candidates who pass high-level examinations will be recruited as Police Inspectors, while university graduates will be appointed as Sub-Inspectors.

Firm measures will be taken to maintain law and order, the IGP assured. “There is no political interference. I will act solely under the powers granted by the Constitution. Decisions to strengthen law and order will be implemented across all levels of the police service, and appropriate action will be taken against those who fail to carry out their duties,” he added.
