Move to expedite development of Trincomalee oil tank farm; says Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath
25-Mar-2026.
Sri Lanka is looking to fast-track the development of the Trincomalee oil tank farm as a long-term solution to the country’s ongoing energy crisis, with support from India and the United Arab Emirates, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath has said, according to The Hindu.
The project, aimed at establishing a large-scale fuel storage facility in the Eastern Province, is viewed as a permanent solution to address fuel distribution challenges.
“Temporary solutions are not sustainable. Given the global energy situation, long-term strategic planning is essential for managing oil storage and distribution,” the Minister noted.
The initiative follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed in April 2025 between Sri Lanka, India and the UAE, with the objective of developing Trincomalee into a regional energy hub.
