Modernization of Maradana Railway Station launched under the Clean Sri Lanka program
16-Sep-2025.
As part of the Clean Sri Lanka initiative, the modernization of Maradana Railway Station under the Dream Destination project was inaugurated on September 15 under the leadership of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
According to the government’s vision of creating a “Prosperous Nation – Beautiful Life,” aimed at achieving a sustainable, modern, and standardized public transport infrastructure and lifestyle, a national project has been launched under the Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation, in collaboration with the Clean Sri Lanka initiative and with public–private partnership, to modernize 100 railway stations across the country.
This project seeks to provide safe and convenient railway station facilities for all passengers, including those with special needs, by creating clean, attractive stations.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake unveiled the plaque to mark the beginning of the modernization of Maradana Railway Station, conducted an inspection tour of the station, and visited several areas including the control room.
A new Sinhala computer font, “Ruhunu Kumari,” belonging to the Railway Department, was also introduced on this occasion.
Maradana Railway Station, considered a historically important station in Sri Lanka and the second largest in Colombo District, will undergo modernization without affecting its heritage character.
Speaking at the event, Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation, Bimal Rathnayake, said that neglect of the railway service and political interference had turned railway employees into victims of the old political culture, which became a challenge to building a quality service.
He added that the project aims to restore public trust in the railway service — the main mode of daily transport — maintain efficiency and effectiveness, and promote tourism. The minister emphasized that this project is being carried out by uniting railway trade unions, passengers, residents of the area, and the private sector, and called for continued support in the future.
