Kidney Stone Surgeries Delayed at National Hospital of Sri Lanka
23-Jun-2026.
More than 1,000 surgeries for the removal of large kidney stones have reportedly been postponed indefinitely at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka due to the breakdown of specialised medical equipment.
Hospital sources said that two Intracorporeal Pneumatic Lithotripsy machines used to break and remove kidney stones are currently out of service.
The machines are essential for Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) procedures, a minimally invasive surgery used to remove large kidney stones through a small incision.
Although specialists have repeatedly requested replacement equipment, the machines have yet to be procured.
As a result, patients who are admitted for surgery are often sent home due to the unavailability of the required equipment.
Some patients are being transferred to other hospitals, including the Matara National Hospital, for treatment.
Despite four specialist surgeons being available weekly for these procedures, the shortage of equipment continues to severely affect services.
Applications for the purchase of replacement machines have already been submitted, but procurement procedures are yet to be completed.
