Chairman of the National Movement for Social Justice and former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has urged the government to appoint a high-level committee comprising relevant experts and intellectuals to ensure an efficient and transparent distribution mechanism, before the impact of global supply pressures escalates into social unrest.

Following the joint attack carried out by the United States and Israel on Iran at the end of February, tensions in the Middle East have intensified, and the resulting effects have impacted the entire world.

As part of these repercussions, fuel prices in Sri Lanka have risen sharply, leading to an increase in food prices as well.

In a post published on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Jayasuriya noted that with fuel prices soaring and the cost of living rising drastically, the next major impact of the crisis is likely to be reflected in food security.

He further warned that the country may soon face hoarding, import profit competition, and fertilizer shortages, stressing that proper and immediate measures are essential to manage the situation.

Accordingly, he advised that the government should appoint a high-level committee of suitable experts and intellectuals to ensure an efficient and transparent distribution process, before global supply pressures erupt into social upheaval.
