The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) has launched an inquiry into allegations that former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa misused over 1.03 billion rupees in public funds between 2010 and 2015.

According to a complaint by Gamandha Tushara, Chairman of the People’s Movement Against Corruption and Waste, the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (appointed by former President Maithripala Sirisena) had already detailed these misuses in its final report.

The complaint states that during 2010–2014, Basil used Air Force aircraft for domestic travel, costing Rs.155,451,612 from the “Maga Neguma” project, and utilized 14 vehicles belonging to the Presidential Secretariat, causing an estimated Rs.612 million loss to the government.

Additionally, 64 naval personnel and 84 army soldiers were assigned for his personal security, costing Rs.264,370,800 from public funds.

Tushara urged that all responsible officials and individuals be prosecuted under the findings of the Commission.

All supporting documents were formally submitted to CIABOC.
