23-Jun-2026.
Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Kumar Deka, a 1988-batch IPS officer, is likely to receive a third one-year extension, making him the longest-serving chief of India's premier internal intelligence agency. Serving since June 2022, his tenure has seen key counter-terrorism, counter-insurgency, and border security initiatives, including curbing infiltration and dismantling terror modules.
The extension aims to ensure leadership continuity amid rising security challenges like cyber threats and drone incursions. Final approval awaits the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
