India Hands Over Bailey Bridge Components to Sri Lanka
01-Mar-2026.
The First Secretary (Economic and Commerce) of the High Commission of India formally handed over a consignment of 214 metric tonnes of Bailey bridge components to officials of the Road Development Authority (RDA) and the Disaster Management Centre (DMC).
The shipment arrived in Colombo from Visakhapatnam on February 24.
The bridges are part of a USD 450 million reconstruction and rehabilitation package announced by Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar during his visit to Sri Lanka following Cyclone “Ditwa.”
The bridges will be installed in several locations across the country. Technical assessments are being conducted by Indian Army engineers in close coordination with the Sri Lanka Army and the RDA.
India has previously provided four Bailey bridges to Sri Lanka, including two in Kilinochchi District and two along the Kandy–Ragala road, helping restore connectivity in challenging terrain.
