The IMF announced that it is considering a request from the Sri Lankan government for 200 million USD in emergency financial assistance due to severe disaster impacts.

The fifth review under Sri Lanka’s Extended Fund Facility is scheduled for consideration by the IMF Executive Board on the 15th of this month.

Responding to a question regarding Sri Lanka during the IMF’s monthly media briefing on Dec 6 in Washington, IMF Communications Director Julie Kozack stated that the IMF is examining additional avenues of support for Sri Lanka’s recovery and will provide updates after assessing the country’s post-disaster economic situation.

A statement issued by IMF Mission Chief for Sri Lanka, Evan Papageorgiou, on Friday (5), reads:

Sri Lanka has suffered severe impacts from Cyclone Titwa, and we express our deepest condolences to all affected.

The government has requested 200 million USD in emergency assistance. We are reviewing this request, and it will be forwarded to the Executive Board for approval.

Given Sri Lanka’s challenging circumstances, we stand ready to fully support the government’s efforts to recover and rebuild.
