Government Plans to Close 1,500 Schools – Ceylon Teachers’ Union
24-Jan-2026.
The government plans to close approximately 1,500 schools with fewer than 50 students, according to Ceylon Teachers’ Union President Priyantha Fernando.
Speaking to the media in Colombo on 22 January 2026 regarding education reforms, he stated that 1,506 schools nationwide with fewer than 50 students are slated for closure, affecting the education of approximately 48,000 students.
He said the move would also impact the working conditions of around 11,000 education sector employees, including 9,882 teachers and 1,506 principals and acting principals.
He noted that 159 schools have been identified for closure in the North Central Province alone, with eight already reportedly closed. He stated that during a recent discussion with the President, it was confirmed that the closures would be implemented.
Fernando further stated that under Circular No. 34/2025, initial steps have already been taken to close low-enrolment schools. Reports indicate that around 500 schools have been instructed not to admit Grade 1 students in 2026, which he said would lead to their gradual and deliberate shutdown.
The Teachers’ Union strongly opposed the move, stating that under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, all children are entitled to free and safe primary education. He warned that the government’s actions violate children’s fundamental rights and would severely affect rural students.
