Government must operate according to the Constitution; Maithripala Sirisena

A politician’s journey is incomplete if they do not face imprisonment. Former President Maithripala Sirisena stated that the government must operate in accordance with the country’s Constitution.

He made this statement during a media briefing with opposition parties held in Colombo on August 24.

He further added: “We have suffered for our political principles. We have been imprisoned. We have faced many injustices. A politician’s political journey is incomplete if they do not experience imprisonment. We are concerned about the arrest of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
We will work devotedly, in a democratic manner, to protect former President Ranil Wickremesinghe. While there may be differences in politics, everyone must unite in times of crisis.
The government must function in a way that upholds the rule of law and democracy. To protect democracy, the government must operate according to the Constitution.”
