Government Lacks Understanding of Macro and Micro Economic Management: Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa
28-May-2026.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has accused the government of lacking any understanding of both macroeconomic and microeconomic management, claiming that the country’s entire economic structure has stagnated due to the failure to properly implement either policy framework.
He made these remarks during a special discussion held at the Opposition Leader’s Office on May 26 with micro, small and medium-scale entrepreneurs regarding the severe challenges they are currently facing due to the prevailing economic situation.
Premadasa stated that macroeconomics involves key indicators such as unemployment, inflation, trade balance, balance of payments, economic growth, budget deficits and exchange rates. He claimed that serious public questions have now arisen regarding the government’s performance in these areas.
He further alleged that the government had completely neglected microeconomic management as well, despite the fact that individuals, families and small-scale entrepreneurs form the foundation of the country’s economic system and wealth generation.
According to Premadasa, the government has failed to protect livelihoods and business activities while abandoning microeconomic management altogether.
He added that the opposition would once again raise these shortcomings and the livelihood difficulties faced by entrepreneurs during upcoming Parliamentary sessions on behalf of the public.
