The Treasury has approved President and Finance Minister Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s request to provide an initial payment of 25,000 rupees for disaster-affected people to return to their homes and begin repairs.

According to Finance Ministry Secretary Dr. Harsha Suriyaperuma, 7.5 billion rupees has been allocated for this relief program.

He added that the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank have agreed to support restoring people’s living standards and rebuilding damaged infrastructure.

Speaking about the emergency allocations, he said several special measures have been taken on the President’s instructions to provide immediate relief to affected communities.

Based on recommendations from the Ministry of Defence, the Disaster Management Centre requested grants for emergency relief. The President advised all relevant parties to ensure quick assistance and to work towards improving the lives of affected people as soon as possible.

The Finance Minister had earlier requested that 25,000 rupees be given as an initial payment for victims to return to and repair their homes. The amount was originally planned to be 10,000 rupees, but it was increased due to the President’s intervention. A total of 7.5 billion rupees has been allocated for this.

The payment will help families resume their daily lives. It will be distributed through Grama Sevakas. The previous relief payment of 3,500 rupees per affected family has now been increased to 10,500 rupees.

Future relief will follow Disaster Management Centre recommendations.

He stated that full support will be given to rebuild livelihoods and restart industries. The 30 billion rupees allocated for disaster management in the national budget will be used effectively.

Due to improvements in the Central Bank’s performance, financial stability, and cleaner public administration, international countries have extended support to Sri Lanka. The World Bank and Asian

Development Bank have agreed to assist in rebuilding infrastructure and improving living standards.

Special attention will be given to reviving the small and medium enterprise sector. Improving the quality of life is essential for national progress, he said.
