Electricity tariff hike to cover coal-related losses – Consumer Association
10-May-2026.
Electricity Consumers’ Association Chairman M.D.R. Athula has alleged that the 18 percent tariff increase is a move to cover major corruption related to coal imports and to meet IMF conditions.
Speaking at a media briefing on May 9, he said the Public Utilities Commission has imposed a heavy burden on consumers using more than 180 units.
He questioned the justification provided by authorities, stating that issues at the Norochcholai coal power plant and the import of substandard coal have caused the current crisis.
He alleged that due to reduced coal power generation, electricity is being purchased at higher costs from thermal plants, increasing overall expenditure.
He further claimed that corruption in coal procurement is being concealed and criticised the PUCSL for aligning with the government rather than consumers.
He warned that the tariff increase will affect both households and small and medium industries, leading to higher production costs and inflation.
He also criticised unfulfilled promises regarding employee compensation under previous tariff revisions.
