Electricity Tariff Hike Based on False Data: Electricity Consumers’ Association

The Electricity Consumers’ Association has stated that the recommendations and data submitted by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) to justify an electricity tariff increase lack credibility, and has urged the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) not to approve the hike, noting that the CEB is already operating at a profit.

The CEB has proposed an 11.57 percent tariff increase for the first quarter of the year, citing reduced rainfall at major hydroelectric reservoirs during the tariff review period, outstanding debt, fuel price fluctuations, and compensation paid to retired employees under the new Electricity Act.

The proposal has drawn strong opposition from multiple groups, with Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa calling on all parties to unite in protest against the tariff increase.

The Electricity Consumers’ Association reiterated that the data presented by the CEB is inaccurate and that approval for a tariff increase should be denied.
