Don't allow electoral reforms: Rauff Hakeem

If unnecessary reforms to the electoral system are introduced to eliminate representation of smaller parties, it will be disastrous even for those who hope to form the next government.

The opposition must build consensus to prevent the government from making such changes, said Sri Lanka Muslim Congress leader Rauff Hakeem.

Speaking at the UNP’s 79th convention on September 20, he said:

Historically, the SLMC has stood with the UNP to make key decisions and face challenges. Recently, President Anura openly declared that funding would not be allocated to local councils unless they voted for his party. Similar stories are being told by many in government.

During past governments, all development projects were disrupted by JVP strikes and protests. Today, the same JVP threatens unions engaged in strikes. We also saw how the government handled the party office issue in public. This is a dangerous slide into dictatorship.

Having discarded all promises, the government now interferes with the electoral system. We know well how governments behave with a two-thirds majority.

It was because of our proportional system that the JVP, which had only 3% support, still got representation in local councils. If that system is abolished, remember how badly it will affect you when you become opposition.

We strongly opposed the provincial council system when Ranil, as Prime Minister, introduced it. But now, there have been no provincial councils for 12 years. If reforms aim to eliminate smaller parties, it will destroy even the hopes of those expecting to form the next government. We must not allow this. Opposition consensus is necessary, he said.
