Doctors’ union ready to intensify trade union action
08-Feb-2026.
The Government Medical Officers’ Association warned it is prepared to intensify ongoing trade union action over unresolved professional and administrative issues.
A decision on the next phase will be taken on February 11. The union said the action reflects longstanding challenges faced by the medical community and involves withdrawing from duties beyond official service requirements without additional allowances.
The association rejected claims that the action is linked to transfers and stated that around 8,000 transfers remain unimplemented due to administrative failures.
The union listed several demands, including establishing a Sri Lanka Medical Service, resolving transport and allowance issues, addressing postgraduate trainee concerns, and updating the number of approved doctors in the public health system.
