The All Ceylon Nurses’ Association has stated that the ongoing trade union action by doctors is unjustified and is against the interests of innocent members of the public and patients.

The Association’s General Secretary, H.M.S.B. Mediwatte, made these remarks while addressing the media on April 5.

He stated that with the upcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year holidays, the strike would severely affect patients who visit hospitals to obtain necessary medicines and undergo medical tests. He said the arbitrary actions of doctors are depriving the public of their right to healthcare.

He further pointed out that despite the ongoing trade union action, nearly 96 percent of doctors have applied for new appointments, indicating the failure of the present protest. This, he said, demonstrates that the majority of doctors prioritise public service.

He alleged that a certain group that had previously used political influence to obtain transfers and appointments of their choice is now attempting to regain dominance, as the current government has restricted such practices. Such actions, he warned, would place the lives of ordinary citizens at risk.

He emphasised that responsible trade unions must support government efforts to address shortcomings in the health sector. Since the present government is capable of respecting trade union rights, launching protests for short-term gains is condemnable, he added.

He also affirmed that the Nurses’ Association remains committed to ensuring uninterrupted healthcare services.
