Claims of Economic Decline for Political Gain are Irresponsible: PM Harini Amarasuriya
20-Jun-2026.
Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya has stated that there will be no need for Sri Lanka to enter into another Extended Fund Facility (EFF) programme with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) after 2027, adding that claims that the economy is deteriorating are being propagated for narrow political gains.
Speaking during a discussion on the current political situation with a private television channel, the Prime Minister said those who had mismanaged public finances and driven the country into bankruptcy were now attempting to mislead the public by portraying the IMF programme negatively.
She noted that Sri Lanka sought IMF assistance following the economic crisis and bankruptcy in 2022, and that the conditions currently being implemented were part of the agreed recovery programme.
"The same groups that accepted IMF conditions for economic recovery are now attempting to create a false impression among the public that the programme is harmful. The IMF programme has helped restore fiscal discipline and has been essential for the country's economic stabilisation," she said.
The Prime Minister further stated that strong anti-corruption measures had been introduced and public administration had been made more transparent and efficient. She accused opposition parties of making false allegations for short-term political advantage.
She reiterated that the IMF programme is expected to conclude in 2027 and that the country is continuing to meet its debt obligations. Therefore, she said, the public need not be alarmed by claims that the economy is in decline.
