“The Chairman of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption is a former member of the JVP legal division. What is the government’s stance on this?” asked MP Nalin Bandara of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya during the parliamentary debate on September 26.

He alleged the commission is politicized and enforces government repression. He highlighted irregular land acquisitions, such as an aide of former minister Pillayan obtaining 250 acres in Pasikudah. Despite instructions to recover the land, no action has been taken.

Bandara also criticized customs and port operations, noting the release of 323 containers without checks. He warned that if law enforcement continues to act as a police state, Sri Lanka risks a fate similar to Nepal.

Citing former JVP member Nandana Gunathilaka’s revelation, he said: “The Bribery Commission Chairman was once part of the JVP legal wing. The Commission today is not independent but politically weaponized. Opposition MPs are being targeted.”

He added that the government is trying to enforce a “one country, one party” system and warned against policies that risk alienating India while favoring China.
