Case Against Sumanthiran Postponed
28-Aug-2025.
It was earlier announced that Sumanthiran had suspended Vali North Pradeshiya Sabha member Ponnambalam Rasendran from party membership through a letter, on the grounds that he had acted contrary to the instructions of the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) during the election of Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Valikamam North Pradeshiya Sabha.
Following this, the said Pradeshiya Sabha member filed a case in the Jaffna District Court, stating that Sumanthiran had arbitrarily removed him from the party without any basis or central committee decision.
At the last hearing, the party’s leader and general secretary submitted in writing that the very filing of the case was erroneous.
On August 26, the Pradeshiya Sabha member filed his counter-objection, stating that the objection submitted by the party leader and secretary was partly in English and partly in Tamil, which was unlawful.
As the language of judicial administration in Jaffna is Tamil, he argued that the objection should have been filed entirely in Tamil.
Accordingly, the case has been postponed to the Tamil month of Aipassi (October–November).
