British Tamils Forum Calls for Collective Action on Resettlement and Reconstruction
25-Aug-2025.

The British Tamils Forum has presented a proposal for urgent resettlement and reconstruction in the Tamil homeland, calling on other parties to work jointly on this initiative.
In a media release, the Forum stated: “For over a decade, we have been engaging with India and Western nations supportive of humanitarian efforts, urging immediate resettlement and reconstruction for war-affected Tamil people. Since 1983, many Tamils displaced by the war have lived as refugees in India. Continuous efforts are being taken to improve their lives while also rebuilding the war-torn Tamil homeland.
Successive Sri Lankan governments, however, have neglected Tamil resettlement and even imposed obstacles to it. Resettlement and reconstruction, which are crucial post-war tasks, must be implemented urgently and cannot be delayed until a political solution is reached. To postpone them would be an irresponsible act that prolongs people’s suffering. We therefore call upon key figures in Sri Lanka, India, and other nations to recognize that successive Sinhala governments have deliberately sought to weaken the Tamil people. The present government’s Minister Bimal Rathnayake has even stated in Parliament that Sri Lanka will take responsibility for all refugees in India. We are ready to work together with all stakeholders who genuinely care about the well-being of the Tamil people, to implement these humanitarian efforts urgently. Tamil political and civil organizations must also exert pressure on the Sri Lankan government regarding resettlement and reconstruction.”
