18-Mar-2026.
Former Speaker and Parliamentarian Ashok Ranwal, who had a non-appearance in court regarding an accident case, was released on bail after voluntarily appearing before the Mahara Magistrate’s Court. Additional Magistrate Pandara Lankasinghe issued the order on March 16, confirming his release under previously set bail conditions.
The accident in question occurred last year in Heyyanthuduva, Theni Mullai. When the case was taken up on March 13, Ashok Ranwal did not appear in court, prompting a warrant for his arrest. Lawyers Pasan Gunaratne and Premasiri Perera filed a special motion, after which Ashok Ranwal appeared in court and was granted bail.
The charges include failure to prevent an accident, negligent driving, causing minor injuries to passengers, and operating a vehicle in an unsafe condition. Ranwal denied the allegations, claiming he was innocent.
