Agreement signed with the Government of India to establish a new Accident and Emergency Treatment Unit at Mannar Hospital

An agreement has been signed with the Government of India to provide a new Accident and Emergency Treatment Unit building, along with essential medical equipment, for the Mannar District General Hospital.

The signing ceremony for the Memorandum of Understanding between the Governments of Sri Lanka and India, for the construction of the new Accident and Emergency Unit at Mannar District General Hospital and the provision of essential medical equipment including surgical instruments, took place at the Ministry of Health and Mass Media on September 10.

Accordingly, the agreement was entered into under the leadership of Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalintha Jayatissa and the High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha. The Health Minister stated that this occasion provides an opportunity to further strengthen the bilateral relations between the two countries.

The Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Mass Media, Dr. Anil Jasinghe, and the Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha, signed the agreement. As per the agreement, the Government of India will bear a cost of 600 million rupees for this project, and all work will be completed within three years.

It is noteworthy that the Government of India has undertaken this initiative in response to a request from the Government of Sri Lanka to construct the Accident and Emergency Treatment Unit at Mannar Hospital and to supply the required medical equipment.

Among those present at the event were Additional Director General (Planning) Dr. S. Sritharan, Additional Secretary (Development) Sunil Galagama, Director (Planning) Specialist Dr. Janaki Widanapathirana, representatives from the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka, and several other dignitaries.
