Police media spokesman, Deputy Inspector General of Police Minura Senarath, said that in special nationwide cordon-and-search operations conducted by police during the period from January to September this year, 1,248 kilograms of heroin and 1,852 kilograms of “ice” (methamphetamine) were seized.

He made these remarks during a special press briefing convened to publicise the series of special cordon-and-search operations carried out by police nationwide.

He went on to say that special cordon-and-search operations are carried out every day by all police divisions and the Police Narcotics Eradication Division nationwide. During these operations, large quantities of narcotics have been seized by police.

According to the figures, in the nationwide cordon-and-search operations conducted by police from January to September of this year, 1,248 kilograms of heroin and 1,852 kilograms of “ice” were recovered.

Additionally, 14,221 kilograms of cannabis, 29 kilograms of cocaine, 506 kilograms of hashish, 3,579,339 narcotic tablets, and drug utensils were seized.

To report information about narcotics, the police have this year introduced a special WhatsApp number — 071-8598888 — and the Police Headquarters has also introduced telephone numbers to contact senior deputy police chiefs responsible for each province.

Now, members of the public will be able to give information in the coming days to the senior deputy police chiefs assigned to provinces and to the Senior Deputy Inspector Generals of Police responsible for police regions, he said.
