1,089 Sri Lankan Security Personnel to Be Deployed to Haiti
23-Jun-2026.
Sri Lanka is preparing to deploy a special contingent comprising more than 900 military personnel and 189 Special Task Force police officers to Haiti to assist in restoring law and order in the violence-hit Caribbean nation.
The Ministry of Defence said the deployment is in support of the US-led multinational security mission operating under United Nations Security Council Resolution 2793.
In a first for the Sri Lankan military, the contingent will include a female military engineering unit trained in explosive ordnance disposal operations.
Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal (Retd.) Sampath Thuyacontha stated that human rights screening of the personnel is nearing completion.
He added that a UN inspection team will conduct final assessments of the contingent's fitness and equipment before deployment, which is expected by the end of July.
Sri Lanka's participation follows an official request from the Haitian government supported by the United States and Canada.
The contingent will also be equipped with locally manufactured mine-protected "Unibuffel" armoured vehicles and infantry fighting vehicles.
