The Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health has reported an increase in influenza cases across the country and urged the public to remain vigilant and follow the necessary health guidelines to prevent further transmission.

Commenting on the situation, Dr Jeevatharan Hamsanandi, a community medicine specialist attached to the Epidemiology Unit and an official of the influenza prevention programme, said the Unit was monitoring the spread of influenza through sentinel hospitals across the country.

Data collected on a weekly basis were being shared with medical experts and regional health authorities.

“There appears to be an increase in influenza transmission at present. With the number of cases rising, preventive measures have become particularly important.

“Personal hygiene and respiratory hygiene practices similar to those followed during the COVID-19 pandemic should be maintained. If we continue to observe the behavioural changes adopted during the pandemic, we can help prevent a sudden and widespread outbreak of influenza.

“Everyone experiencing respiratory symptoms should wear a face mask. Rather than making masks compulsory for everyone, as was done during the COVID-19 period, those with symptoms must wear them to prevent transmission to others and protect themselves.

“The antiviral medicine oseltamivir, used to treat influenza, is being supplied adequately to hospitals through the Medical Supplies Division and regional medical supply divisions,” she said.
