Actor–politician Vijay on Dec 9 held his first public meeting in Puducherry after the Karur stampede, thanking the government for granting permission when, he said, a similar event was not allowed in Tamil Nadu.

He began his speech by greeting “Puducherry makkal” and said, “We are not different, we are the same.”

Addressing the gathering, Vijay said Puducherry had historically shown Tamil Nadu the way by electing MG Ramachandran in 1974, three years before his 1977 victory in Tamil Nadu.

Vijay praised the ruling NR Congress and Chief Minister N Rangaswamy for what he called “unbiased security” for the event, despite his party campaigning independently.

“The Puducherry government is not like the DMK government in Tamil Nadu,” he said, adding that he hoped the Tamil Nadu government would “learn from this.”
