Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan accused the CPM of communal targeting after leader P Nandakumar called Malappuram a hub of fundamentalists, demanding an apology. Satheesan criticized CPM leader Pinarayi Vijayan for not objecting during Nandakumar's remarks at a party meeting.

He alleged the comments continued an anti-Malappuram stance and mirrored RSS-style dog-whistle politics. CPM denied communal intent, stating criticisms targeted IUML's communal influence. Several groups filed complaints, with Satheesan warning legal action against communal hatred.
