Telangana urges Karnataka to release Krishna water to save standing crops

Telangana Tourism Minister Jupally Krishna Rao and several ruling Congress MLAs have urged Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to release Krishna river water from the state’s reservoirs to protect crops in downstream Telangana.

The delegation met Shivakumar in Bengaluru on the evening of September 22 and said water was urgently needed as crops in parts of Telangana were at a crucial stage.

According to an official release issued late on September 22, the Telangana side told Shivakumar that crops under the Jurala, Nettempadu, Bhima and Koilsagar irrigation projects needed water for further growth. The release said Shivakumar responded positively to the request.

The delegation said crops were being cultivated on about 5.5 lakh acres under the four irrigation projects. It requested Karnataka to release 5,000 cusecs of water for a month to save the crops, the release said.
