Rs.80 billion electric railway project to begin next year

Construction of an electric railway service project, estimated to cost Rs.80 billion, is scheduled to commence next year as part of efforts to modernise Sri Lanka’s public transport system.

Railways General Manager Ravindra Padmapriya said the infrastructure planning required for modern suburban transportation has been fully completed and that work will officially commence next year.

The initial development work will be carried out along the main railway routes connecting Colombo (Maradana) station with key suburban areas including Ragama, Panadura and Malawatte.

Further regional expansion is planned thereafter. A budget allocation of Rs.80 billion has been set aside for this comprehensive infrastructure development programme.

The transition to electric trains is ultimately aimed at providing daily commuters with an efficient, faster and environmentally friendly public transport system, he said.
