Bilateral discussions on creating new investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s port sector were held on August 17, between Olivier Brass, Deputy Ambassador of Switzerland, and Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation Anura Karunathilaka at the Ministry premises.

Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Ambassador Olivier Brass said MSC, Switzerland’s globally leading international shipping company, had shown considerable interest in investing in Sri Lanka’s port sector.

He noted that the company’s Chief Executive Officer had previously visited Sri Lanka and held discussions with relevant authorities. He added that facilitating the necessary arrangements for trade discussions was one of the key responsibilities of the Swiss Embassy.

Meanwhile, Minister Anura Karunathilaka said the Government’s policy was to provide private investors engaged in port-related projects with appropriate independence in operations, human resources and procurement activities.

He also said the Government was prepared to take appropriate and firm decisions for the development of the country.

The two sides also held extensive discussions on plans to establish a new operational centre on a 14-acre site within the Colombo Port premises, as well as future development plans.

With Sri Lanka’s economic recovery, the confidence of international investors is once again strengthening. Against this backdrop, the Government is paying increased attention to attracting international private investment to the port, logistics and aviation sectors.
