Representatives of Tamil-Speaking Parties to Meet President and Opposition Leader Tomorrow

Representatives of six Tamil-speaking political parties, which last month agreed to work together in advancing the interests of Tamil-speaking communities while maintaining their respective political identities and policy positions, are scheduled to meet President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa separately on August 3.
The parties include the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK), All Ceylon People's Congress (ACPC), Ceylon Workers' Congress (CWC), Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC), Democratic Tamil National Alliance (DTNA) and the Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA).
The parties had earlier agreed to cooperate constructively on matters of common concern affecting Tamil-speaking people while preserving their individual political identities and policy positions.
As a follow-up to that decision, they formally requested an appointment with the President to discuss several issues of national importance affecting Tamil-speaking communities.
Accordingly, representatives of the six parties are scheduled to meet the President at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo at 10.00 a.m. on August 3.
The discussions are expected to focus primarily on three key issues, i.e. the drafting of a new Constitution, the immediate conduct of long-delayed Provincial Council elections, and the release of lands in the Northern and Eastern Provinces currently under military occupation.
In addition, the meeting is expected to cover several other matters, including housing and livelihood support for the Hill Country Tamil community, the repeal of the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA), the release of political prisoners, and ensuring truth, justice and accountability in cases of enforced disappearances.
Later the same day, at 3.30 p.m., representatives of the six parties are also scheduled to meet Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa at his office in Colombo to discuss these and other issues relating to the welfare and rights of Tamil-speaking communities.
