Will Legal Action Be Taken Against Ravi and Shani Too, Asks Sarvajana Balaya

The Sarvajana Balaya party has questioned whether legal action will also be initiated against Ravi Seneviratne and Shani Abeysekara, following the death sentences imposed on former Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara and former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando for failing to prevent the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks despite receiving intelligence warnings.
Speaking at a media briefing held at the party headquarters on August 1, the party's media spokesperson, Dr Priyangara Mahamullage, raised the issue.
He said the death sentences had been imposed because the two former senior officials failed to act despite receiving accurate intelligence before the attacks. However, he noted that Ravi Seneviratne and Shani Abeysekara, who held key positions in the intelligence and Criminal Investigation Department at the time, continue to occupy senior positions in the present administration despite being referred to in the report of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry.
He questioned whether their association with the ruling National People's Power had effectively placed them beyond accountability.
Dr Mahamullage also referred to remarks reportedly made by the President in Parliament stating that Ibrahim Nana, father of the terrorists responsible for the attacks, was innocent, and questioned that position.
He further alleged that extremist ideologies continue to be spread through certain madrasa schools, drawing a comparison with the indoctrination of youth during the LTTE insurgency.
He asked what action the present Government had taken over the past two years to curb extremist teachings, despite previously pledging to eradicate terrorism while in the Opposition.
He maintained that the law should apply equally to everyone and argued that it was unacceptable for officials aligned with the Government to escape punishment while others were held accountable. Those responsible for administrative failures leading to the tragedy, he said, should face appropriate legal action.
