Probe Committee Appointed Over Negombo Prison Violence

The Government has appointed an independent committee to investigate the unrest that occurred at Negombo Prison on July 5 and 6.

The committee, approved by the Cabinet and appointed by Presidential Secretary Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, is headed by retired Supreme Court Judge Priyantha Fernando. Retired Additional Solicitor General Milinda Gunathilake and President's Counsel Mohan Weerakoon have been named as members, while Senior Assistant Secretary to the President K.L.D. Asela will serve as Secretary to the committee.

The panel has been tasked with conducting a comprehensive inquiry and submitting a report on the causes of the violence.
