Trade, Investment and Renewable Energy Key to Economic Growth: Deputy Minister Arun

Deputy Minister Arun Hemachandra has stated that the Sri Lankan Government is placing strong emphasis on trade, investment, digital transformation and renewable energy as part of its strategy to achieve sustainable economic growth.
He made these remarks while representing Sri Lanka at the 7th China-South Asia Cooperation Forum held in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China.
Addressing the forum under the theme “Strengthening Cooperative Partnerships for a Shared Future with Neighbouring Countries,” the Deputy Minister reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s commitment to regional cooperation, mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and collective development.
He highlighted the longstanding friendship between Sri Lanka and China, built upon centuries of cultural exchanges, trade relations and people-to-people connections. He said the partnership has contributed significantly to Sri Lanka’s socio-economic development and remains a cornerstone of the country’s foreign relations.
The Deputy Minister noted that the Government is working to build a stable, transparent, investor-friendly and globally connected economy. Priority sectors include trade, investment, tourism, digital transformation, renewable energy, agriculture, education and skills development.
He further observed that Sri Lanka’s strategic location in the Indian Ocean positions the country as a key link between South Asia, East Asia and global markets. He also acknowledged Yunnan Province’s role as a gateway connecting China with South and Southeast Asia.
Sri Lanka, he said, is keen to expand cooperation with Yunnan in areas including tourism, education, agriculture, tea, gems, healthcare, trade, transportation, innovation and cultural exchange.
The Deputy Minister additionally stressed the growing importance of youth engagement, educational exchanges, digital technologies, artificial intelligence, climate adaptation, disaster risk reduction and efforts to build a peaceful and prosperous regional future.
