Deputy Cabinet Spokesperson Vijitha Herath stated that the temporary instability in the country’s economy has been caused by external factors, including global geopolitical tensions, rather than internal issues.

Speaking at the weekly Cabinet press briefing at the Department of Government Information on May 19, he said approximately USD 900 million is expected to flow into the country soon through the International Monetary Fund and the Asian Development Bank.

He noted that Finance Minister and President Anura Kumara Dissanayake briefed the Cabinet on the current economic situation, adding that steps are being taken to maintain foreign exchange reserves, including new tax measures and import restrictions.

He further stated that USD 700 million is expected from the IMF and USD 200 million from the ADB, while export earnings are also increasing, enabling the government to manage the situation effectively.
