Police have urged the public to remain highly vigilant against online scams during the upcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year season, warning that fraudsters may steal personal information and money through advertisements and links shared on social media claiming to offer gifts and discounts.

In a statement issued by the Police Media Division, it was noted that public use of online platforms for shopping and bill payments increases during the festive period, creating opportunities for cybercriminals to engage in financial fraud and data theft.

Police observed that due to the current economic difficulties and the desire for quick financial gain, some groups may fall victim to such scams. Complaints received by police stations and the Criminal Investigation Department have reportedly increased in recent times.

Fraudsters are reportedly using fake promotions, fraudulent commercial websites, and imitation banking websites to steal information. They also use fake messages urging users to update banking apps, encourage scanning fraudulent QR codes, and employ email and SMS scams, as well as caller ID spoofing technologies.

Police further warned that scammers may illegally use images of the President, Prime Minister and other prominent public figures to gain trust. Such activities may lead to targeted attacks and identity theft. The public has been strongly advised to remain cautious and alert when carrying out online financial transactions.
