Special security measures islandwide for Sinhala and Tamil New Year
03-Apr-2026.
Special security plans have been implemented islandwide to ensure public safety during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year season. Accordingly, around 10,000 police officers will be deployed for traffic duties, Police Media Spokesman Assistant Superintendent of Police Udaya Kumar Wudler said.
He made these remarks during a special media briefing held in Battaramulla on April 2.
He stated that the primary objective of the Sri Lanka Police is to create an environment in which the public can celebrate the festival peacefully and respectfully. For this purpose, intelligence officers, uniformed and plainclothes personnel have been deployed across the country covering 608 police stations and 48 police divisions.
He advised those leaving their homes during the festive period to be cautious about jewellery, cash and valuable documents, ensure doors are properly locked, and inform neighbours or village committees. He also urged the public to avoid posting real-time location updates and photos on social media, as this may provide opportunities for thieves.
He further said that 10,000 police officers have been assigned for traffic duties. A large number of accidents occur due to drunk driving and speeding, and therefore motorists must act responsibly and drive carefully without endangering loved ones.
He also advised the public to seek guidance from lifeguard units when bathing in water bodies, avoid bathing in unfamiliar areas or places where danger warnings have been issued, and stressed that parents must pay extra attention to the safety of their children.
