I made the mistake of doubting Rafael Nadal at last year's French Open: Coco Gauff

World No. 5 women's singles star Coco Gauff learned an important lesson last year - never doubt Rafael Nadal. The American star conceded that she did not pin her hopes on Rafael Nadal ahead of Roland Garros 2022, but had to take back her words when the Spaniard raced to a record-extending 14th title on the clay court of Paris.

However, Coco Gauff is not willing to do the same mistake this year even as Rafael Nadal has not played in the lead-up to the French Open, starting May 28. Nadal last played at the Australian Open where he suffered a shocking 2nd-round exit after picking up a thigh injury.

"I'm sure he probably would have preferred to play some matches before. Him and Roland Garros is something special.

"I made the mistake of doubting him (last year)," the American added. "Next thing you know, he pretty much stormed his way to the final and won in straight sets."
