Social media activists and members of the public staged a protest in front of the Ministry of Environment, demanding justice over the death of an elephant named Kavanthissa.

The main objective of the protest was to voice opposition to what the demonstrators described as negligence on the part of the Government and the Ministry of Environment in protecting wildlife.

The activists alleged that the current Environment Minister, Dhammika Perera, had failed to ensure the protection of elephants and other wild animals.

One of the protesters’ key demands was that the Minister resign over the authorities’ failure to prevent repeated attacks on wildlife, incidents of poisoning and the illegal use of firearms against wild animals.
