A 19-year-old man has been sentenced to three years in prison for impaired driving causing death in a crash that killed a 13-year-old passenger.

Connor Douglas received the sentence in Regina provincial court on April 15 after pleading guilty as part of a joint submission from the Crown and the defence. The judge accepted the recommendation, emphasizing the need for denunciation and deterrence in cases of impaired driving.

"As much as it saddens me to send a young man to prison for three years, such a sentence is necessary," Judge James Korpan said.

Douglas was also handed a five-year driving prohibition and ordered to provide a DNA sample.
