Pearen is president of the Yorkton Brick Mill Heritage Society, which spearheaded a remarkable effort to redevelop the site into a community and interpretive centre, preserving it as a valuable gathering place.
At an event this week, the provincial government announced an injection of $600,000 to complete construction. Another $2.4 million has already been raised through fundraising by local residents and businesses, the City of Yorkton, federal grants and the Yorkton Tribal Council.
The flour mill, constructed with local bricks, was built in 1900 and ran well into the 1990s.
The Yorkton Brick Mill Heritage Society formed in 2012 to save the building, which had been designated a municipal heritage site 15 years before.
Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister David Marit said the redevelopment of the mill helps preserve the provinces agricultural history.
