Vavuniya Mayor Discharged by Magistrate's Court

The Vavuniya Magistrate's Court has discharged Mayor S. Kandeepan after he appeared before court in connection with a complaint regarding the alleged disappearance of the Mayor's ceremonial robe, badge and the municipal mace.

President's Counsel M.A. Sumanthiran argued that the missing items were official articles under the Mayor's custody and described the allegation that the Mayor had stolen his own ceremonial items as unprecedented.

The court recorded the Mayor's undertaking to appear whenever required and released him. Sumanthiran later clarified that reports claiming the court had ordered the Mayor's arrest were false and that no such order had been issued.
