The United National Party (UNP) has accused the Government of attempting to bring Buddhist institutions under direct state control through proposed legislation introduced under the guise of religious authority.

In a statement issued on May 31, the party claimed that the proposed legal framework could undermine the autonomy of Buddhist temples and interfere with matters traditionally handled by the Maha Sangha.

The UNP argued that disciplinary and administrative issues concerning Buddhist monks should remain under the authority of the Mahanayake Theras and the Maha Sangha rather than the Government.

The party also alleged that the Government was moving ahead with decisions affecting Buddhist institutions without adequate consultation with opposition Buddhist parliamentarians and religious stakeholders.

Calling for restraint, the UNP urged the Government to avoid unnecessary intervention in religious affairs and to work in consultation with the Maha Sangha on matters relating to Buddhism.
