Sarath Weerawansa Remanded Until August 22
17-Jul-2026.
The Colombo Fort Magistrate's Court has ordered that Sarath Weerawansa, brother of former Minister Wimal Weerawansa, be remanded until 22 August over allegations of misusing vehicles belonging to the State Engineering Corporation, thereby causing financial loss to the Government.
The order was made when the case was taken up before Colombo Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena on 17 August 2026.
Sarath Weerawansa was arrested by the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) on allegations that he had misused vehicles belonging to the State Engineering Corporation, causing financial loss to the State.
Following his arrest, the suspect was produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrate's Court.
During earlier proceedings held on 10 June, FCID officers informed the court that, acting on the advice of the Attorney General, Sarath Weerawansa had been named as a suspect in the case.
Subsequently, upon a request by the FCID to prevent the suspect from leaving the country, the court imposed an overseas travel ban on him.
After considering the evidence presented yesterday, the Magistrate ordered that the suspect be remanded until 22 August.
