Ready to Quit Politics if Judicial Reform Bill is Passed by January: Sujeewa Senasinghe

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Sujeewa Senasinghe has said he is prepared to resign from Parliament and quit politics altogether if the Government succeeds in passing its controversial judicial reform legislation by January.

Speaking at a media briefing held at the SJB headquarters in Colombo on July 21, Senasinghe said that if the Government managed to enact the proposed amendments to the judicial laws within the stipulated period, he would immediately relinquish his parliamentary seat and retire from politics.

He alleged that the proposed reforms would undermine the country's 200-year-old legal system and erode the independence of key institutions, describing such a move as tantamount to "burying democracy."

He stressed that such measures should not be permitted under any circumstances.

Senasinghe also called on the Government to hold the long-delayed Provincial Council elections within the next two to three months.

He further emphasised that the independence of the judiciary and public institutions must be safeguarded and that judges should be appointed solely on the basis of merit and experience, free from political interference.
