A protest demanding the resignation of Finance Secretary Harshana Suriyaapperuma over the alleged cyber theft of USD 2.5 million from the Treasury turned violent on April 28 outside his residence.
The demonstration, led by Sakeeswara Bandara and supporters of the New People’s Front, escalated when a group claiming to be local residents confronted the protesters and attacked them with cow dung and eggs.
Protesters had gathered in the Akkuregoda, Pelawatte area, accusing the government of financial mismanagement and attempting to cover up corruption.
Tensions escalated further as both groups exchanged heated arguments, requiring police intervention. Riot control units were deployed to restore order.
Sakeeswara Bandara alleged that the current administration was involved in a financial fraud and called for transparency and accountability.
