Opposition Leader Questions $2.5 Million Fraud Concealment
25-Apr-2026.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has accused the government of failing to ensure financial security following the cyber theft of 2.5 million US dollars intended for foreign debt repayment.
He questioned why Parliament was not informed of the incident for several months despite its severity.
Premadasa noted that responsibility for external debt repayment was recently shifted to new institutional mechanisms and raised concerns about whether adequate safeguards were in place.
He also questioned the independence of the technical investigation committee and criticised the lack of transparency in handling the matter. He called for a neutral and transparent investigation and demanded clarity on whether public funds would be used to cover the loss.
