The joint opposition strongly condemned the attack on protesters who were engaged in a peaceful demonstration outside the residence of Treasury Secretary Harshana Suriyaapperuma, calling for accountability over the alleged misuse of national resources and public funds.

According to the opposition, protesters were subjected to violent acts including the throwing of faecal matter and burning firecrackers, which it described as a disgraceful attempt to suppress the truth. The statement further alleged that the ruling JVP was attempting to intimidate citizens and silence dissent.

The opposition stated that such acts of violence are unacceptable and warned that the public will not be intimidated by threats.

It further alleged that the protest was linked to serious accusations of financial irregularities involving billions of rupees of public funds, and stressed that citizens have a right to question such matters.

The statement also referred to past incidents of violence and destruction of public property, asserting that such behaviour reflects a continued pattern of political intimidation.
